Introduction: Azimganj is situated at the right side of river Bhagirathi. There are two railway stations one is Azimganj City and other is Azimganj JN. The old and historical city of Nawab period is situated near Azimganj City Railway Station. Azimganj, in the state of West Bengal, is a very important glamorous place under the district of Murshidabad. The water of Ganga is flowed throughout our town. The land of our Azimganj is very fertilized and rich. The land of our town is constructed by sedimentary rocks. Various religions of people came in our Azimganj and live here by loving the atmosphere and environment of our Azimganj. The people of different religions such as Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain and Sikh have lived here. In spite of living different religious of people, they do not forget that they are the sons of our India.


In India the river Ganges flows through the coastal city Azimganj in Murshidabad district of West Bengal state. This city is Concentrated with natural beauty and combined with heritage space and it contains a complete evidence of history. This city is develop by water of Ganga or Bhagirathi so fertile alluvial soils rich agricultural land. People of different religion came here and they are satisfied and they are living on weather, climate. There are many religious people such as – Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain, etc.

            Geography: Jiaganj - Azimganj the two towns located on opposite sides of the Bhagirathi River, Jiaganj on the east bank and Azimganj on the west bank. Baluchar is the original ancestral name of Jiaganj. The name was changed to Jiaganj only often the Nawabs came in power of Murshidabad.

            Geographical location of this region in the District of Murshidabad is very small but it is important.

            Ancient History: The River Ganges has been produce from mountain of Goumukh, two branch has divided near Dhuliyan of Murshidabad district, finally put our proud two cities separated Jiaganj and Azimganj has fallen in Bay of Bengal. Many Kings, and Queens have spent many years in this town and reinforces the importance of the historical left them with memories. Such as Chaar Bangla Temple, Panchamukhi Temple, Keshorkumari, Baroduary, etc. There are many famous people was born, such as - Dr. Balai Chand Mukhopadhya, Rani Bhabani, Raja Rai Budh Singh, etc. - this place is full by the Variation  of them.

            Connectivity: There are two paralal railway links on both of the sides of river Bhagirathi. One is connecting Sealdah to Jiaganj through Lalgola Branch line and another Howrah to Azimganj through Barharwa Azimganj - Katwa Loop Line. A new bridge is comming up over river Bhagirathi Connection Nashipur to Azimganj (Nashipur Bridge). Azimganj - Nalhati Railway line started in the year 1872.
            Apart from this through road links Jiaganj is connected to adjacout tiwnhips like Lalbag (MSD), Berhampore, Bhagbangola, Jangipur by bus service.

            Jiaganj - Azimganj are connected by boat service, managed by local municipality on river Bhagirathi.

History of Azimganj Railway Station:-
            In 1863, the Indian Branch Railway Company, a private company opened the Nalhati - Azimganj branch line. The 27 K.M. tracks was initially 4 gauge line. The track was subsequently converted to 5.6" gauge. The Indian Branch Railway Company was purchased by the Government of India in 1872 and the line was renamed Nalhati State Railway.

            In 1913, the Hoogle - Katwa Railway constructed line from Bandel to Katwa Loop Line.
With the construction of the Farakka Barrage and opening of the railway bridge in 1971, the railway communication picture of the area completely changed Azimganj Junction emerged as an important station in the Lilua to New Jalpaiguri.

            Municipality, Police Station, Hospital: The two cities Jiaganj Azimganj have only one municipality – which is Jiaganj – Azimganj Municipality – which current chairmen Sri Sankar Mondol. The police station of Azimganj city is Jiaganj – to give better service there is a police outpost (Police Fari) in Azimganj City. There is only one hospital in this Azimganj town which is Azimganj General Hospital (A.G.Hospital) – here bengali writer Balai Chand Mukherjee worked as a doctor.

            Religion, Temple, Mosque: Many people of different religion have come here and they are permanently stay here by loving this place. Since different religions and people of different nationalities living here so many temples have been built based on race, religion, and mosque.

            Political Effect: There are two main political party in this Azimganj Town, one is Communist Party of India (CPIM) and other is Congress, there are also Forward Block, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Now Azimganj town maintenance by Jiaganj – Azimganj Municipality – currently this municipality run by Communist Party of India (CPIM).

            Industry and Market: The town's main livelihood depends on agriculture, the alluvial soil suitable for agriculture, here rice, wheat, jute, chillies, eggplant, spinach, mangoes are also a lot of very good vegetables grown. By depending the status of the raw materials on shore of Bhagirathi River, near the Azimganj City station, there is an Azimganj City Market has been developed. This market is not important only for Azimganj or Jiaganj town, total Murshidabad district depend on this market because it is a valuable market of Murshidabad district and this Azimganj City market is a centre of good vegetables distribution. There is another small market in the Azimganj Town - near Azimganj JN. Station which is known as mini-market. There are also Tobacco Industry (Bidi Industry), many industries - including Silk Industry, Biscuit Industry and chanachur (Bombay mix) industry.

      Economic Status: The Azimganj town has fallen behind economically, 75% of the people here bring every day and eat every day so, due to this, work resources from the economic aspect of Azimganj town is significantly lag behind. Most of the people in the lower and middle class here. Yet some doctors, lawyers, teachers, businessmen and service man are here.

            Lack and Difficulty: There is a lot of lack of Azimganj town, such as – 1) There is no high quality health care or hospital or nursing home or doctor for better treatment or instant treatment the common people suffer for this, is to go to Sadar Hospital BERHAMPORE which distance is more than 17 km. from Azimganj town. 2) The status of the road is very bad, broken roads that can take a long time to be repaired once it is broke, the wide of the main road is very low so, two small cars cannot pass together. There are also plenty lack of employment. Here most of the common people brings every day and eat every day.

            Conclusion: Despite the many difficulties, the love of man to man, it is too hot. Many of the people in many religions live together. However, the Azimganj Town – the people of Azimganj proud with their dream city AZIMGANJ of Murshidabad district.
